about STEVE WHEELERShow Up AND BE PRESENT
Steve has spent his career striving to live by the mantra of "Show Up and Be Present". This principle embedded during his early days serving in the U.S. Army as a Counterintelligence Special Agent and continued as he rose through the various security roles at Lockheed Martin, this mantra was a core attribute. This attribute along with several other key principles such as acting with integrity, humility and transparency coupled with being responsive were key elements to his success. As he rose to the role of Senior Director of Security & Emergency Services for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, "Show Up and Be Present" was something that he tried to instill and foster in all the security professionals he mentored over the years. It continues to be a message that he shares with young and aspiring students at Georgia Southern University where he serves on the Advisory Board for the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences. A 1980 graduate of Armstrong State College (now Georgia Southern University) with a degree in Criminal Justice, Steve has travelled the world, immersed himself in different cultures, and has experienced a wide array of adventures and learning opportunities along the way. Steve's early life was spent overseas. After his mother passed away when Steve was 6 years old, Steve and his father moved to Tehran, Iran, where they lived for three years as his father worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers supporting infrastructure growth across the Middle East. Steve and his father then moved to Tirrenia, Italy, where Steve attended Livorno American Elementary School and Livorno American High School (LAHS) where he excelled in several sports. As Steve recalls about his time in Italy, "Those 10 years in Italy were full of travel, adventures, and great friendships." Steve returned to Italy in 1982 as a Counterintelligence Special Agent. Steve was stationed in Italy from January 1982 to January 1985 as a Special Agent and Special Agent in Charge at the Livorno Resident Office, Livorno, Italy. In these positions, Steve principally served as a liaison with Italian Intelligence and Counter-terrorism officials. He was actively involved in cases involving the Red Brigades, the Italian terrorism group active during the early 1980s. He also conducted Operational Security Evaluations (OSE) of sensitive overseas military locations during this period.
